Waitakere Voices Youth Choir
Rehearsals begin Feb 9, 2021
We are super excited to have a youth choir in the Waitakere Voices organisation! Waitakere Voices Youth Choir is Auckland's newest choir - we started up in term 2 of 2019 and are always learning cool new music.
This is for students between the ages of 9 and 17 who are keen to sing, and perform with a group in the West Auckland community.
During the school term, rehearsals are on Tuesday Evenings - 5:15 to 6:45pm, at Laidlaw College, 80 Central Park Drive, in the Upper Room. Check out the map and picture below for more details.
There are heaps of car parks inside the main gates, and in the carparking areas highlighted in the image below. Parents are welcome to come and sit in on rehearsals.
Cost is $30 per school term. If finances are a barrier to singing in the youth choir we do allow scholarships - have a chat with us and we can work something out.
What sort of music do you sing?
The choir sings all sorts - in term 2 we performed a song from Harry Potter, some tunes from The Greatest Showman, and Rhythm of Life with two adult choirs and an orchestra! Other songs include some traditional songs - like Scarborough Fair, some jazz (It Don't Mean a Thing (if it ain't got that swing)), and a few other numbers. In term 4 of 2019 we performed even more songs with the adult choir and some musicians in a huge Christmas concert in Henderson - some of our singers were even soloists - how cool is that!

Why should I join a youth choir?
There are so many reasons to join a youth choir that it is impossible to give them all on the website. Here just a few:
- The People: choir is a great time to meet people who love similar things to you. Everybody in the choir is joined by a love of making music. Plus, the people you meet in choir are often people you'll stay in touch with for a long time.
- We're a team: Teams aren't just a sports thing - we all work together to make something that's bigger than any of us as individuals.
- The Skills: There are heaps of skills that you learn from being in a choir: singing techniques, music reading, and listening are some of the obvious ones, as well as a few more obscure skills - like teamwork, blending, speaking.
- Performing: Part of being in a choir is that we perform! Every term or two we put on concerts for our friends, whānau, and the community. Often we'll join up with the adult choir and make a massive noise!
- It's fun! Being in a choir is one of the coolest things anyone can ever do! It's heaps of fun and worth every moment.
